Our lab investigates how lived experiences shape the brain at the molecular level. We study how the social environment can “get under your skin” by altering epigenetic regulation of genes that affect brain structure and function. By uncovering these mechanisms, we aim to understand how negative experiences, such as those associated with stress and trauma, can increase vulnerability to mental disorders. At the same time, we explore how positively transformative experiences, such as those produced by psychedelics, may trigger molecular changes that enhance resilience and improve mental health.
